Editor

Editor Michelle Tesoro on Checkmate Pacing in “The Queen’s Gambit”

A girl triumphing in a boys’ world of midcentury competitive chess is at the crux of Netflix’s limited series The Queen’s Gambit, which manages to make the board game not only thrilling but evocatively stylish, spanning Beth Harmon’s (Anya Taylor-Joy and Isla Johnston, as young Beth) bleak 1950s-era childhood in a Kentucky orphanage through her jet-setting young adulthood during the 1960s. Beth, drawn from Walter Tevis’s novel of the same name,

Supervising Sound Editor on Capturing the Sound of “Ted Lasso” Remotely

Ted Lasso began life nearly a decade ago, in what must now seem like a more innocent time, as a character in a series of promos for NBC as they embarked on coverage of Britain’s Premier League. That character, created and portrayed by SNL alum Jason Sudeikis, is an American football coach, hot off a miracle season with a perpetually struggling college, who is hired by England’s mythical AFC Richmond squad to coach,

“Inside Pixar” Premieres Tomorrow on Disney+

While a lot of the oxygen around Disney+ series understandably gets suctioned into the engines of the Falcon Crest (we’re making a joke about The Mandalorian‘s massive popularity, gang), the streaming channel has had some really excellent documentary series, too. From Into the Unknown: Making of Frozen 2 to Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney+ has offered viewers fascinating inside looks at some of these beloved franchises.

Prepare Yourself for Something Very Different With Marvel’s “WandaVision” on Disney+

Ever since WandaVision‘s title was released, there’s been a growing sense of fun and weirdness around Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series. And, owing to the pandemic and the production delays it caused, WandaVision will now be Marvel’s first Disney+ series to premiere, having leapfrogged over The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The buzz only grew as we saw initial images and that Super Bowl spot, revealing that the series would be set in some alternate reality where not only was Vision (Paul Bettany) somehow alive (he was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War after all),

Dave Chappelle Returning to “SNL” Four Years Later

You might recall the last time Dave Chappelle hosted Saturday Night Live. Perhaps you watched the show in a daze of bewilderment and dread. The date was November 12, 2016. Chappelle was the first SNL host of the Trump era, taking to studio 8H just a couple of days after Trump bested Hillary Clinton in the presidential election on November 8. The country was still in collective shock,

Cinematographer Andy Rydzewski on Lighting the Horrors of Middle School in “Pen15”

We’ve hit the apex of spooky season, so let’s talk about one of the creepiest shows on television: Pen15. Yep, co-creators Maya Erskine’s and Anna Konkle’s adult foray back to seventh grade, rife with slut-shaming, passive aggression, and surprise three-way phone calls. Now in the first half of its second season (the next seven episodes will likely air on Hulu in the spring), the women are once again ensconced among their young peers,

You’ll be excused if you missed Netflix’s little Halloween treat for The Witcher fans this past Saturday night. “Bounty hunting is a complicated profession,” the Client (Werner Herzog) says at the start of this season one recap of The Mandalorian. And indeed, it is. Official Trailer for “Selena: The Series” Reveals Netflix’s Look at a Legend

It’s been 23-years since we’ve seen a proper take on the incredibly gifted performer Selena Quintanilla. That was in writer/director Gregory Nava’s 1997 film Selena, in which a young Jennifer Lopez starred as the Texas-born Tejano singer whose career was only just getting started when she was tragically murdered a few weeks shy of her 24th birthday. Now, Selena Quintanilla is getting an even more fulsome look in an upcoming series from Campanario Entertainment and Netflix.
