How Ghost in the Shell ’s VFX Supervisor Got Cyberpunk Right
A cult hit since its manga origins, Rupert Sanders’s live-action Ghost in the Shell has had to meet high fan expectations, particularly in regard to visuals. The film is as well known for its gritty, near-future post-cyberpunk aesthetic thanks to Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 animated film, and as Paramount Picture’s Scarlett Johansson-driven feature arrived in theaters, a legion fans were more curious about what the movie would would like than the cybernetic-focused science fiction plot.
The Amazing Year of Moonlight, Lemonade, and Black Panther Production Designer Hannah Beachler
Production designer Hannah Beachler has produced incredible artwork that led her to a former slave owning plantation in Louisiana where she stood among forty powerful women of color. They danced and cried and shared their stories. Oh, and they listened to Beyoncé sing Freedom a capella on a paper stage Beachler created.
Beyoncé’s triumphant visual album Lemonade splashed into the social conversation almost a year ago. Coming from one of the most influential black women in the world,
Watch This Moving Carrie Fisher Tribute From the Star Wars Celebration
Get out your tissues. As the Star Wars celebration officially kicked off in Orlando, Lucasfilm finished the 40 Years of Star Wars panel with this lovely tribute to the late, great Carrie Fisher.
We’ve written recently about Fisher’s continued presence in the final two installments of the new trilogy, as filmmakers Rian Johnson, Colin Trevorrow, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Disney CEO Bob Iger have all weighed how to handle the icon’s passing in narrative terms.
Blade Runner 2049‘s Barkhad Abdi on his Deformed Character
Blade Runner 2049 star Barkhad Abdi recently shared new details about his character with The Hollywood Reporter, unveiling great new bits of information about the sequel to Ridley Scott’s iconic 1982 film.
“He’s a scientist,” says Abdi, “and he’s totally deformed.”
Abdi claimed that he didn’t feel any pressure trying to live up to the original film, but that it was “a blessing.”
Orange is the New Black Season 5 Teaser
The new season of Orange Is The New Black is picking up right where we left off, and if you watched season 4, you know that it’s a wild moment for the women of Litchfield Penitentiary.
The newly released teaser brings us back to Daya (Dascha Polanco) holding a gun at the terrible prison guard Humphrey (Michael Torpey), with all the women going absolutely nuts and adding to the chaos.
Hot Off Baby Driver, Edgar Wright’s Grasshopper Jungle Nears Deal
Edgar Wright's Baby Driver was one of our favorite films at SXSW and one of our favorites of the year thus far. Beginning with one of the best set pieces in recent memory, Baby Driver is a super-powered, music-obsessed blast from start to finish. Beginning inside a Subaru that’s been turned into a supercar, we stay with Baby (Ansel Elgort) as he listens to Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s “Bellbottoms,”
Check out the new Justice League Teaser Poster
It was only two weeks ago when we shared the trailer for Zack Snyder's Justice League, which gave main cast all get their moments to shine, showcase their individual personalities and superpowers, and create enough tension between them that they can create enough drama for when the villains aren't in the frame. There was also some much needed humor, like when the Flash asks Batman what his superpower, and the caped crusader replies,
The Predator Star Sterling K. Brown Predicts big Things for Sequel
Sterling K. Brown has some good news from the set of Shane Black‘s The Predator. The Emmy-winning actor whose performance as Christopher Darden in American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson was a standout in a series filled with them told Entertainment Weekly that like Black’s previous efforts, Predator has a “wicked sense of humor.” While John McTiernan’s original Predator had some gallows humor (and peak Arnold Schwarzenegger),
The Fate of the Furious Races Towards Monster Opening
Here’s an insane stat: The Fate and the Furious may make more in its opening weekend than the very first The Fate of the Furious made in its entire theatrical run back in 2001. The Los Angeles Times is estimating that The Fate and the Furious is tracking to make somewhere between $280 and $300 million worldwide this weekend,
Here’s the First Official Transformers: The Last Knight Trailer
This past Wednesday we took a look at the cutting edge technology that director Michael Bay had employed for Transformers: The Last Knight. Using his own in-home editing suite in Miami, Bay explained why it was worth it for the Transformers franchise to embrace the latest technology, even if it meant paying a premium. Then we shared the trailer teaser for the film,

Atomic Blonde’s 2nd Trailer Reminds you Charlize Theron is the Bomb
We saw longtime stunt coordinator and John Wick director David Leitch’s Atomic Blonde at SXSW and were blown away. As we wrote at the time, Theron might actually be an even more perfect vessel for Leitch’s hyper stylized, ingenuously crafted action films than Wick’s Keanu Reeves. Your reminder is currently playing on HBO; Theron’s stunning performance in Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road,
Pixar’s at it Again With Dante’s Lunch Easter egg
The hidden Easter eggs tycoons are at it again.
Last week we shared Pixar’s new short, Dante’s Lunch, which exists within the world of the upcoming feature-length film, Coco. It introduces us to the vibrant colors and whimsical nature that Coco will surely expand upon. We also meet Dante, the dog that will also appear in the full-length film.
The short itself is a promo for Coco—a “little appetizer until the movie comes out,”
Thor: Ragnarok Trailer Makes History as Marvel & Disney’s Most Watched in 24 Hours
We had a pretty good feeling about the new Thor: Ragnarok trailer when we shared it this past Monday. It came as no surprise that director Taika Waititi, the man behind What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt For the Wilderpeople, was going to deliver something different. The trailer was at turns funny and thrilling, ending with a battle of the Titans that we didn’t realize we were desperate for until we saw it—a gladiator battle between Thor and an armor wearing Hulk.
The Leftovers Production Designer on Season 3’s Mind-Bending Finish
"It's really hard to create Gary Busey as a blow-up doll," says production designer John Paino, and he should know. For HBO's third and final season of The Leftovers (debuting April 16), Paino oversaw the creation of a 35-foot inflated figure of the toothy celebrity, a major attraction for the Texas spiritual mecca-turned-tourist trap known as Jarden. "The blow-up doll is about this mix of a pop culture sensibility with the beginnings perhaps of some spiritual movement,"
Talking to The Lost City of Z Writer/Director James Gray
Introducing his new film, The Lost City of Z, to a full house at the National Geographic Society auditorium, writer-director James Gray confessed to something he termed "a bit embarrassing": He originally hadn't considered the ecological aspects of the Amazon-set saga that was making its Washington debut in March as part of the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation's Capital. That facet of the tale was revealed to him only when he reached the area of Brazil explored in the early 20th century by his protagonist,
