Matt Reeves Confirms Robert Pattinson as Batman

First, it was semi-official. Then it was almost fully official. And now it’s—sorta definitely official? While Warner Bros. has yet to publicly confirm that Robert Pattinson is your next Batman, the director of the upcoming The Batman has gone ahead and done it himself. Matt Reeves Tweeted an image of Pattinson from Good Time with a few bat emojis. Case closed. Battinson is real.

Reeves and Warner Bros. were on the hunt for a younger person to play Bruce Wayne than our last version of the Caped Crusader, Ben Affleck. The Batman will focus on Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne in a darker, more noir detective story than the last two times we’ve seen Batman on the big screen, in Justice League and Batman v. Superman respectively. Word is that Reeves’ The Batman will not connect to those two films, which means we’ll be getting a reboot. The last time Batman was rebooted for the modern era, it ushered in a new golden age for superhero films—Christopher Nolan’s excellent 2005 film Batman Begins. Nolan, of course, went on to direct two more Batman films for his Dark Knight trilogy, which stands as the greatest superhero trilogy of all time.

Now that Reeves has found his man, it’ll be intriguing to see what we might learn about the project itself. Pattinson took a delicious swerve from his early career success playing teenage heartthrob (and vampire) Edward Cullen in the Twilight series to a slew of meaty, difficult roles in darker films for excellent directors. There’s the aforementioned Good Time, from the Safdie brothers, and his work with the great Clare Denis for High Life. He also worked with David Cronenberg in his gritty/great Don DeLillo adaptation, Cosmopolis in 2012. There’s a good chance that Reeves will tap into Pattinson’s intensity to create a Bruce Wayne unlike any we’ve seen before. It’s exciting.

Before Pattinson dons the cape and cowl, he’ll be shooting Christopher Nolan’s new film Tenet. One imagines the two of them having a few Batman discussions on set.

The Batman is scheduled to hit theaters on June 25, 2021.
