Robert Eggers’ “Werewulf” Trailer Unleashes Aaron Taylor-Johnson in a Medieval Nightmare

Writer/director Robert Eggers has carved out a killer niche for himself. He has become one of the modern masters of historic horror, creating an oeuvre that has spanned the unforgiving, haunted wilderness of 17th-century New England (2015’s The Witch),  the blasted madness that grips two lighthouse keepers on an island off of 19th-century New England (2019’s The Lighthouse), the bloody trials of a 10th-century Viking prince (2022’s The Northmen), and his creeping, crawling takek on one of the most iconic Gothic tales of them all (2025’s Nosferatu). Now Eggers has set his sights on medieval Britain, taking us into the foggy countryside where a beast has been terrifying villagers. Who else would you want behind Werewulf?

The first trailer for Eggers’ latest introduces us to another story of a family trying to survive in the wild, ungoverned world, in this case in 13th-century England. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as a husband and father who seems to be cursed with an affliction that he cannot control. There’s a brief shot toward the end of the trailer that shows Taylor-Johnson’s character frothing at the mouth as he becomes the titular beast.

Taylor-Johnson is joined by Eggers’ favorites like Willem Dafoe, Ralph Ineson, and Lily-Rose Depp. Eggers has also reteamed with many of his longtime collaborators, including cinematographer Jarin Blaschke, editor Louise Ford, and production designer Craig Lathrop.

Check out the trailer below. Werewulf stalks into theaters on Christmas.
