Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Big Night & the Rest of Your 2019 Emmy Winners

The 2019 Primetime Emmy Awards delivered some surprises, so catharsis, and bestowed much-deserved awards on some of the industry’s brightest new stars, and the night did not go entirely as expected. The night was supposed to be dominated by Game of Thrones, which garnered a record-setting 32 Emmy-nominations. It did take home the coveted Best Drama Series but won in only one other major category; Best Supporting Actor to Peter Dinklage (it won 12 Emmys in total for the night). It lost to Netflix’s Ozark for direction (a real surprise), and HBO’s Succession for writing (less of a surprise, but still surprising).

One of the night’s big winners was for writer/director/producer/star and all-around gift Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She won Best Actress, Writing, Director, and Best Comedy Series for her truly perfect second season of FleabagBill Hader took home another Emmy for Best Actor for his excellent work in his HBO hitman series Barry, which was also up for its second season for a slew of awards. Surprisingly, HBO’s venerable comedy powerhouse, Veep, was shut out in all major categories despite this being the show’s final season.

HBO’s sensational Chernobyl won Best Limited Series, Writing, and Directing, topping Ava DuVernay’s excellent When They See Us, although one of the series’ stars, Jharrel Jerome, won for Best Actor.

Meanwhile, Pose star Billy Porter became the first openly gay black man to win to Best Actor for a drama series, besting Game of Thrones‘ Kit Harrington. Best Actress was nabbed by Killing Eve star Jodie Comer, who bested Daenerys herself, Emilia Clarke.
