Look out for an Avengers: Endgame Super Bowl TV Spot

Prepare for Thanos to snap his way into your Super Bowl viewing party. It seems as certain as the resurrection of Peter Parker that the Russo Brothers’ conclusion to their two-part epic will release a new spot during Sunday night’s game. This is what happened during last year’s game when the Avengers: Infinity War Super Bowl spot was the most buzzed about ad during the whole night. (Editors note: that game was something of an inverse of what happened in the film; the Avengers-like underdog Philadelphia Eagles beat the Thanos-like New England Patriots—yes, your editor is from Philadelphia.) The Hollywood Reporter delivers the unsurprising news that Disney will be trotting out new looks at some of their biggest titles of the year during this year’s game, capitalizing on the Super Bowl’s massive built-in audience:

“Disney is expected to have the biggest presence and will showcase several of its upcoming event pics throughout Super Bowl Sunday… Avengers: Endgame would seem an obvious choice for Super Bowl attention; last year, an ad for Avengers: Infinity War generated the most buzz of any spot aired during the game, according to a Comscore and United Talent Agency survey ranking both trailer views and social conversation. Not to mention that the Avengers franchise and Super Bowl have a long history.”

What might we see in a new Endgame spot? The first trailer was pretty withholding, showing us our shattered, scattered surviving Avengers in the aftermath of Thanos’s universe-halving butchery. One imagines that Marvel/Disney will use the huge Super Bowl audience to deliver something new to fans—if not a full-length trailer, then at least something with new footage that gives us just enough to speculate about what it all means. Amateur Marvel sleuths will be paying special attention. These are the folks who have been suggesting there’s an even bigger threat than Thanos, have gamed out the many possible ways the fallen Avengers will get resurrected, and much, much more. They’ll be scouring any new spot for narrative morsels they can devour to sustain their theories. We’re not mocking them; many of them correctly guessed—or revealed through their research—the film’s long-withheld title.

While we’ll be watching and waiting for Endgame to drop a fresh spot, know that you will definitely be getting a look at Dwayne Johnson in beast mode; Universal has confirmed that Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs and Shaw will be releasing a new spot during the game.
