Feast Your Eyes on the First Avengers: Endgame Trailer

“Part of the journey is the end.” This sentiment comes from Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), in a message he’s hoping gets to Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) while he’s adrift in space after the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Tony had been beaten (like everybody else) by Thanos (Josh Brolin) and left in space to die. Tony’s in a bind; his food and water ran out four days ago, his oxygen is going to run out tomorrow morning. He promises her that when he drifts off, he’ll be dreaming of her. So begins the first trailer (and now we know the title!) of Avengers: Endgame, the final in Joe and Anthony Russo‘s truly epic two-part Avengers extravaganza that is ushering in Marvel’s Phase 4.

We then cut to our surviving heroes back on Earth, including Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), each of whom is shattered by Thanos‘s obliteration of half of all living creatures in the universe. Some old friends return (Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye!), and the trailer even ends on a comic note (courtesy of Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, of course). There’s a lot to unpack here, but for now, just enjoy the first glimpse at Avengers: Endgame.

It’s also worth noting that this title, Endgame, was, in fact, mentioned in Avengers: Infinity War, as many sharp eyed-and-eared fans pointed out. Doctor Strange had said “we’re in the endgame now,” during Infinity War, which many folks correctly guessed would be the title to Avengers 4. The Russo Brothers said it wasn’t, so, now we know that when fans do manage to guess at the correct title not to expect the truth.

Alls well that ends well, however, and there is plenty of reason to believe that Black Widow is right when she tells Cap in the trailer, “this is going to work.” The “this” she’s referring to might be the fight against Thanos, the resurrection of their fallen friends, or, we’re guessing, both. Either way, this is truly the Endgame for Phase 3 of the MCU, and, likely, Thanos himself.

Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on May 3, 2019.
