Josh Brolin Says He’ll Play Cable in Four Upcoming Films

Test audiences loved him. We’ve loved him. If you’ve loved what you’ve seen thus far of Josh Brolin’s Cable in the Deadpool 2 trailers, then this is great news: Brolin has confirmed to Empire Magazine that his newcomer to the Deadpool franchise will be a veteran in no time—there are at least four films featuring Cable in the works.

“We think about it in four movie terms,” Brolin told Empire. “We tried to think of Cable as a full arc, not just in this movie, but in the trajectory of four films. That made it a lot more fun for me.”

This doesn’t mean that all of these films are necessarily Deadpool films—they could include the X-Force movie, where Cable will be the main character. Yet what it does mean is that we’ll be getting a whole lot more of this time-traveling cyborg in the future, and that’s a good thing.

Brolin’s got a lot going on. You may have heard he’s playing Marvel’s biggest, baddest villain in an upcoming movie called Avengers: Infinity War? Yeah, of course you have. Brolin’s role in the film is reportedly a huge one, considering the Russo Brothers (Infinity War‘s directors) say the film is essentially told from Thano’s perspective.

As crucial as Brolin the actor is to Infinity War, the finished film replaces him with the massive, blue Mad Titan. In Deadpool 2, despite some mechanical enhancements that give his Cable his Cyborgian elements, Brolin the man is still entirely visible. With four more films, at least, to explore Cable, this character gives the actor and even wider canvass to show off his stuff.

Yet despite being a part of these massive franchises, Brolin says they’re not really his thing. He told Empire that he prefers films and characters that have a definitive ending:

“I don’t like the idea of a franchise, personally. That’s what makes the Thanos thing really great. It’s a finite thing, and I like that.”

This fits with the Russo brother’s recent remark that Infinity War and Avengers 4 films are singular, each with a beginning, middle and end.

As for playing Cable, Deadpool 2 director David Leitch knew he had his man when Brolin came on board:

“I always wanted a great actor to come to the table for Cable and I wanted somebody who could embody the character,” Leitch told Empire. “Josh is obviously a prolific actor, and genuinely in his roles, he finds a humanity to every character he plays, even when he’s playing some things that might be seen as caricatures, he finds a humanity. So I was super excited that we landed him.

You’ll see Brolin next in Avengers: Infinity War on April 27, 2018, and then in Deadpool 2 on May 18, 2018.
