Writer/Director Matt Reeves Shares Set Photo as The Batman Officially Begins Filming

It’s official—The Batman has begun filming and a new era for the Caped Crusader has begun. Writer-director Matt Reeves has shared a photo from set, marking the first day of production for his Batman reboot. As is often the case with set photos released by the director, we’ve got a film slate, revealing the first take of scene 17. Not the most gripping photographic evidence, as it’ll be a while before we see what Robert Pattinson looks like as Batman, but it’s exciting nonetheless to know that The Batman is officially underway.

The cast surrounding Pattinson is excellent. It includes Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner GordonZoe Kravitz as CatwomanPaul Dano as the RiddlerAndy Serkis as Alfred, and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot (better known as the Penguin). Farrell was recently on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to discuss his current film, Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen, when he told Kimmell how impressed he was with Reeves’ script. We’ve known for a long time now that Reeves is after something different with The Batman, which he has said will hew closer to a detective noir film than your traditional superhero story. It’ll be interesting to see how he pulls that off, and how Pattinson’s Batman and Gotham itself differs from the many, many incarnations we’ve seen of both.

Warner Bros. has a lot going on in the superhero department. In just under two weeks they’ll be releasing Birds of Prey, which will give us yet another take on Gotham, this time one ruled by women (Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is the main attraction.) Obviously, there’s last year’s juggernaut Joker, which is up for a slew of Oscars. Further down the road, we’ve got Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984, which arrives on June 5, 2020.

Meanwhile, Reeves’ star-studded The Batman will be one of the studios’ most hotly anticipated films of next year, when it bows on June 25, 2021.
