The Avengers‘ Only Hope of Defeating Thanos

What hope does anyone have against someone who controls time, space, and reality? With the laws of physics at your literal fingertips, are there really any consequences? Avengers: Infinity War was by far the most disheartening venture in the MCU. Every sacrifice the heroes made was thwarted. Their difficult decisions were derailed and denigrated like Star-Lord shooting Gamora or Scarlet Witch destroying the Mind Stone. If Thanos can undo any harm against him, will he ever be defeated?

The Avengers team is now down by more than half and the remaining members face an insurmountable task. Avengers 4 looks bleak, but after a long and presumably bloody battle, co-writer Christopher Markus shines a little light on what will have to be done with the Infinity Stones to take back the universe via CinemaBlend.

“They’ve been misused by people who didn’t understand their true power,” Markus explained. “And now that the real master of them, Thanos, has shown up we can see what they actually do. The problem is, as you can imagine, as you gain control over these things, your story just goes haywire because why are there any stakes for the man who can control time, space, reality, your mind, your soul and power? He can reset as many times as it’ll take. So you have to build in a lot of bumps in the road or maybe keep one stone away from him for long enough in order for the thing to have any dramatic structure at all.”

The MCU really seems to be in a bind, but at least the creators are acknowledging the challenge they’re facing. Pretty much every rule has been suspended, which makes defeating him seem nary unthinkable. However, it is interesting that Markus notes the stones have been misused in the past. That probably points to their power and now that Thanos will be showing off, maybe the Avengers can pick up a few tips from the master.

There are some wild cards here that we need to remember. First, these are superheroes we’re dealing with. We have super strength, space travel, technology, and more on our side. Also, we have some important back up closing in. Captain Marvel may be the most powerful super in the MCU and she will hopefully be reacting to Nick Fury’s SOS.

The most valuable element will undoubtedly be time. With half the Avengers dead, the only way to bring them back will be to change the course of time itself. Sure, Thanos holds the stone, but there could be another way. The Van Dyne’s haven’t played a huge role in the main conflict thus far, but they do have experience in the Quantum Realm, which can manipulate time as well. Obviously, we are expected the Avengers to ultimately be successful, but will it be in a satisfying way? So far, all signs point to yes. We’ll know for sure on May 3 when Avengers 4 finally hits theaters.
