We've been loving the woman vs. great white angle in Jaume Collet-Serra's minimalist thriller The Shallows ever since we saw the first trailer. Like Open Water before it, The Shallows promises thrills within (and because of) it's simple premise; Blake Lively's character Nancy isn't marooned out to sea, she's just 200 yards from the beach when she's attacked by a great white. The name of the game in The Shallows is self reliance. Ralph Waldo Emerson himself would likely agree that Nancy (Blake Lively) is the epitome of it. A strong, smart and resilient young woman who will need to summon everything she has to survive her predicament. This new trailer focuses on the film's central, intriguingly simple premise; Nancy is out surfing when she's separated from the beach (which is not more than 200 yards away) by a great white.

While real life encounters between humans and great whites mostly involve marine biologists, shark cages, and a metric ton of safety equipment, in the movies, great whites have been stalking and devouring us since the Steven Spielberg unleashed Jaws on us in 1975. That's the case again in The Shallows, where a grieving young woman (Blake Lively) is out for a meditative bit of surfboarding when a certain super predator gets between her and the land.
