Edgar Wright & Screenwriter Michael Bacall on Sending Glen Powell Into a Retro-Futuristic Nightmare in “The Running Man”

The Running Man is both an Edgar Wright film and a faithful adaptation of Stephen King. Long before the director made the cult comedy series Spaced and shot his Cornetto Trilogy, he had the inkling that this story would make for a proper film. The fun and violent hijinks aside, the Arnold Schwarzenegger-led film from ’87 isn’t exactly true to the source material.

It’s Glen Powell vs. America in the First “The Running Man” Trailer

Glen Powell is in trouble.

In reality, Glen Powell is doing great, but his character, Ben Richards, sure is, in the first trailer for Edgar Wright’s The Running Man, a reboot of the 1987 sci-fi classic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in the same role.

The conceit is tidy and brutal and will sound familiar, even to folks too young to have seen the original but who have seen Squid Game—Ben’s a down-on-his-luck husband and father in desperate need of cash.

Glen Powell’s a Busy Man

Glen Powell’s dance card is getting awfully full. Powell, who broke out in Top Gun: Maverick and then cemented his status as a rising star with chemistry to spare starring opposite Sydney Sweeney in the romantic comedy Anyone But You, has a slew of upcoming films set to release this summer and a slate of incredible projects he’s attached to.
