Idris Elba is Black Superman in new Hobbs & Shaw Trailer

A brand new trailer for Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is here to fire you up on a Thursday morning. The new look is as joyously super-charged as you could hope for. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are back as the stacked and jacked member of America’s Diplomatic Security Service and the former British military elite operative respectively. These iconic frenemies are forced to team up when a villain comes along who might be tougher than both of them. Combined.

Johnson and Statham are reason enough to go see this Fast & Furious spinoff, but let’s spend a moment paying our respects to Idris Elba. The man is one of the most compelling actors working today. Now, having him play a cyber-genetically enhanced supervillain? That just seems unfair (in a great way). Elba’s character Brixton gives Hobbs & Shaw a sci-fi twist. We’re into it. The franchise has already proven its action chops. If you’re going to do a spinoff, you might as well punch it up with flavors from a different genre. We’re waiting for a Fast & Furious western, next.

It also bears mentioning that the film is directed by action-expert David Leitch, the man behind Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2. Longtime Fast and Furious scribe Chris Morgan penned the script, and joining the three leading men is the great Vanessa Kirby, one of the standouts in the excellent Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Kirby is back as Shaw’s sister, Hattie, who is caught up in the mess with Brixton and the one who suggests the boys play nice so they can all stop him together.

Johnson is the world’s best hype man. He’s promised that Hobbs & Shaw will the most epic showdown in the franchise’s histoyr. That’s saying a lot. Joining the aforementioned great cast are Cliff Curtis, Roman Reigns, Eiza Gonzalez, and Eddie Marsan. Hobbs & Shaw hits theaters on August 2, 2019.

Here’s the official synopsis:

After eight films that have amassed almost $5 billion worldwide, the Fast & Furious franchise now features its first stand-alone vehicle as Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprise their roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America’s Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015’s Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down. But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever — and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown‘s Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister — these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves. Hobbs & Shaw blasts open a new door in the Fast universe as it hurtles action across the globe, from Los Angeles to London and from the toxic wasteland of Chernobyl to the lush beauty of Samoa.
