Details on the Deadpool 2 Re-Release from the Screenwriters
When you wake up this Christmas morning, Deadpool will be waiting under your tree. Yeah, that doesn’t sound too appealing, does it? Let me rephrase. /Film spoke with screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick about a new and teen approved version of Deadpool 2. The altered version will be available December 21 with some new footage and surprises.
The most shocking development is the outrageous, raunchy comedy is being scaled back to PG-13. For all of the teen fans who didn’t get permission to view the R version, they’ll now have a chance to see the Merc with the Mouth battle it out with Cable (Josh Brolin). Taming the foul-mouthed antihero will require a lot of editing, and also some re-shoots.
“We definitely shot new stuff,” Wernick told /Film. “And recently too. After Deadpool 2 came out and we were all sitting around, we came to it less about the idea of let’s make a PG-13 movie and more, ‘Let’s talk a little bit about Deadpool.’ We were kicking around some ideas and then I think it was Ryan [Reynolds] who had the great framing device and we all got excited and went to the studio. They said, ‘Yeah, let’s do it. Fire up the cameras.’”
That framing device is a riff on one of the most beloved fantasy films of all time. Back in September, an adult Fred Savage was tucked in for a bedtime story from a jolly Deadpool, a parody on his role in The Princess Bride. Reese and Wernick declined to comment on who else shot the new sequences, but that means more surprises are in store. Reese said the story won’t be majorly altered but will be a spin on the existing story.
If there is one thing that is clear from the making of Deadpool 2, these guys absolutely love what they are doing. I cannot recall another film that has had so many extras, spoofs, and mashups. Deadpool dropped in on Good Housekeeping, pestered Wolverine, painted like Bob Ross, and out-did the diva on stage. Deadpool himself may seem like a pain at times, but it can never be said that people don’t enjoy working with Ryan Reynolds. There appears to be no one that doesn’t want a piece of the Deadpool action these days.
