Thanos Makes his First Appearance in new Avengers: Endgame Trailer

Oh boy. Finally. It’s our first glimpse at the big purple lunatic since he laid waste to half the universe in Infinity War. Thanos returns—finally—in this new Avengers: Endgame special look. Or more accurately, our heroes return to Thanos. This point is key. And this “Special Look” delivers more fresh footage than we thought we’d get from any Endgame spot leading to the premiere.

“If we do this we’d be going in shorthanded,” says Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). “Yeah, because you mean he killed all our friends?” replies Rhodey Rhodes (Don Cheadle), stating both the obvious and the essential truth. An even simpler truth is what Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) offers: “We owe this to everyone who’s not in this room to try.” That includes not only their friends but half the known population of the universe, too.

So begins the new Avengers: Endgame special look.

“It’s not about how much we lost, it’s about how much we have left.” This comes from Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who we see finally returning to Earth to join the Avengers. In the previous trailers, we’ve only seen Tony lost in space alongside Nebula (Karen Gillan). Here we see him reunited with Pepper Pots (Gwyneth Paltrow) and his fellow Avengers. A plan is brewing to take the fight back to Thanos. The survivors will have the help of two folks who sat out Infinity War. That’s Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd). Yet they’re still down a ton of superheroes, but at least they’re furious.

“We’re the Avengers, we gotta finish this. Do you trust me?” Tony asks Captain America (Chris Evans).

“I do,” Cap says.

This special look builds to a thrilling coda—the Avengers find their way back to the maniac who killed half the universe.

“You could not live with your own failure,” says Thanos (Josh Brolin). “Where did that bring you? Back to me.”

Righteous. You gotta hand it to the Mad Titan—when he’s not destroying half of life as we know it, he sure does have a way with words.

Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26.
