The End is Near in New Avengers: Infinity War TV Spot

We are now officially in the homestretch of Avengers: Infinity War promotional material, with the film due in theaters in only a few weeks (April 27). New TV spots are popping up left and right, giving us morsels of new footage while also giving us a better feel for just how dramatic—and game-changing—the events in Infinity War are going to be. The latest new spot, titled “One Goal,” once again puts the focus on Thanos (Josh Brolin) and his life-long quest to bring the entire universe to heel…while obliterating half of it. That’s the “One Goal” in question, the one that Gamora (Zoë Saldana) is warning the Avengers about.

As we’ve written before, Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo have already said that Thanos has more screen time than any other character in this massive movie (with Thor coming out on top in terms of screen time among the good guys), which makes sense considering he’s the supreme villain in the MCU. Thanos’s quest for the Infinity Stones has fueled so much of what’s happened in the past decade’s worth of the studio’s output. The new spot also highlights one of the film’s emotional backbones—the relationship between Vision (Paul Bettany) and Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olson)—which will likely be put under major stress considering one of the Infinity Stones Thanos is after is embedded in Vision’s forehead. It should also be noted that Thanos’s desire for these Infinity Stones, which will give near infinite power, has led to some of the best fan speculation in any movie about anything, ever. For example, where’s the Soul Stone? Fans have theories.

The most thrilling, chilling new footage in the “One Goal” spot occurs after Vision tells Scarlett Witch they’ve run out of time. What Vision means is likely many things at once: the ‘they’ in question is probably both the two of them, and, humanity as a whole. What we see after Vision says this (who knows if this sequence actually plays out like this in the film, these TV spots and trailers are notoriously cleverly cut together to make you think one thing’s going to happen, when often times it’s a total head fake) is the thick forests of Wakanda shaking and breaking, as some huge force (perhaps Thanos himself, or his Outrider army) moves towards the camera—and supposedly, Vision and Scarlett Witch. It’s a great, scary moment, highlighted by the spot’s music, which is heavy on heavenly (you could argue, funeral-like) singing.

Whereas the Black Panther promotional material was focused on honor, duty and the realization of an incredible new world in Wakanda, the tone of the Infinity War trailers, teasers and spots has been much darker and cataclysmic. We already know that some of our favorite characters are likely not going to make it. It’s given the lead-up to the film’s release an unusually heavy, harrowing feel considering this is, technically, a superhero movie. Superheroes never die—until, shockingly, they do.
