“Whalefall” First Reactions: Austin Abrams’ Banner Year Continues Inside a 60-Ton Sperm Whale
Austin Abrams is having one hell of a year.
After leading Zach Cregger’s critical and commercial hit Resident Evil, playing an extremely unlucky courier named Bryan who has the worst night anyone could possibly imagine in Raccoon City, Abrams is back in writer/director Brian Duffield’s Whalefall. What could be worse than trying to survive hordes of fantastically grotesque, endlessly variable, mutating monsters in a city turned nightmare by a virus? How about being literally swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale?
Abrams is once again coming in for stellar reviews for his performance, here playing a scuba diver named Jay Gardiner who goes diving off the central coast of California to search for his father’s remains, gets swallowed by a whale, Jonah-style, and has one hour to get himself out before his oxygen runs out. In order to survive, Jay will need to deploy every survival technique his father taught him, lessons that felt a little rough at the time. It’s a nifty conceit, first dreamed up by Daniel Kraus in his book “Whalefall,” which Kraus then co-adapted along with Duffield. Josh Brolin plays Abrams’ father, and the cast also includes Elisabeth Shue, Jane Levy, John Ortiz, and Emily Rudd.
Duffield’s direction is also getting serious praise. Duffield worked with production designer Ramsey Avery, who led the team that built practical whale sets to achieve realistic results in camera, including a 30’ whale head with a practical tongue mounted on an animatronic arm that allowed the tongue to open and close closing while being filmed underwater, both of the whale’s two stomachs, the back of the mouth and esophagus, which was suspended in a soundstage.
Whalefall swims into theaters on October 14. Let’s have a peek at those first reactions:
Fell down the majestic gullet of @BrianDuffield ‘s #Whalefall this evening. What an insane ride. I don’t think my knees stopped shaking the entire time. A gigantic, terrifying and emotional spectacle. What movies are made for. Go immerse yourself in it! https://t.co/Hh4n79ssGr

Brian Duffield’s #Whalefall is a new claustrophobic classic. Austin Abrams shines in this oceanic estranged family flick.
Coupled with a stellar performance by Josh Brolin, the film boasts a poignant storyline and phenomenal CGI effects. It’s whale of a time! @20thCenturyUK https://t.co/vkZ2u4tIHh

Like a messed up Inner Space, #Whalefall is guts, slime, and a terrific time. More than just a man-in-a-whale movie though, the entire thing is buoyed by an emotional core that’ll make you blubber. Abrams and Brolin are great, while Duffield shoots the hell out of it. https://t.co/6Zr8Cg9M92

Austin Abrams, whom I love like my son, gets himself in increasingly horrific situations in the insanely stressful #Whalefall All goes a bit mystic whale at the end but I dug it. Not sure anyone would have bet on Abrams being Hollywood’s next biggest star but he’s magnetic https://t.co/pbroTBh5x2

Brian Duffield’s #Whalefall is a blast, and it firmly cements Austin Abrams as one of fall’s most exciting rising stars. This is a film that goes well beyond the gimmick of having a guy stuck inside a whale, as Duffield smartly keeps those moments evolving and escalating in tension while allowing the story outside the whale to build into something much larger.
It’s a uniquely wild, tension-filled thriller about fighting to survive the craziest of circumstances, but also a moving story about managing grief and the almost impossible obstacles we can face in the process. Did not know what to expect with this one, but it’s a great example of smart writing and directing elevating a tricky, chaotic premise. Good stuff!

Genuinely didn’t know what to expect from #Whalefall but I had a hell of a time watching this! Austin Abrams trying to escape the gut of a sperm whale was more stressful than I thought it could be.
See this on a large format like RPX for the full experience! https://t.co/Y1g7UPFox4
