Official Spider-Man: Far From Home Synopsis & Stealth Suit Explained

“Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever.”

The above is the brief synopsis for Spider-Man: Far From Home, confirming what we all saw from that surprisingly heavy new trailer. (Avengers: Endgame spoilers ahead). We now know that Peter Parker (Tom Holland) will be dealing with not only the Elementals in Far From Home but also the loss of his mentor, Tony Stark. As if this wasn’t enough, Peter’s going to be pressed into action by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) with a new ally from a different version of Earth—Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). So if you’re keeping score, Spidey is dealing with the death of a loved one, supernatural creatures from a parallel dimension, and a new superhero who may or may not be his friend. Luckily he’s got that new stealth suit, huh?

If you’re wondering what the new black suit is all about, a little backstory is required. The last time Peter Parker left New York City on a field trip, who should appear in Washington D.C. at the same time as him but Spider-Man. Now that Peter’s off for Europe in Far From Home, it would be a little too obvious if good old Spidey, in his iconic red and blue suit, appeared again. Hence the cool black new suit with the goggles. This new look is provided by Nick Fury to keep Spider-Man’s identity hidden. It also lacks all the super-powered tech Spidey has enjoyed thanks to Tony Stark.

Peter’s new suit also comes with new responsibilities. We’re in post-Iron Man world here, and these new threats from the parallel dimension are likely a direct result from Tony Stark’s Thanos-dusting snap. Fury convinces Peter to take action in the trailer in part by reminding him that with Iron Man gone and other Avengers (Thor and Captain Marvel) off-planet, he’s gotta step up. The stealth suit allows Peter to ply his trade in Europe without anyone linking these exploits back to his actual identity. It’s decidedly low-tech compared to the Iron Spider suit Tony made for him—but it’s better than nothing.

Executive producer Eric Carroll told Screen Rant that the suit’s lack of high-tech add-ons is part of the point: “We thought it was funny to for Nicky Fury to give a suit to Spider-Man that was just basically a tactical black jacket with pants and then slap the glasses on. So we, again, just thought it was a fun juxtaposition with what he usually wears that will hopefully highlight the differences and the fun in that relationship.” The stealth suit will be Peter’s main costume for “more or less the second act of the movie,” Carroll added.

With Tony Stark gone, it makes sense that we’ll be seeing Spider-Man relying on his pure abilities rather than technology. It’s not like the guy’s lacking superpowers.

Spider-Man: Far From Home opens on July 2, 2019. It represents the official last film in Marvel’s Phase 3.
