Geeking out Over the Elementals in the Spider-Man: Far From Home Trailer

Sony dropped the first trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home yesterday, and it made quite the splash. We speculated this past August that Hydro-Man could be in the film after Tom Holland shared some behind-the-scenes footage that included a whole lot of water being blasted everywhere. Yet the Hydro-Man of the comics is human named Morris Bench who gets transformed into the watery beast after (you guessed it) an experiment gone wrong. The water creature we saw in yesterday’s Far From Home trailer does not appear to be human at all, but rather one of the elementals, creatures that wield the power of the natural elemental forces of Earth. Could it be Hydro-Man? Yes, yes it could. Do we think that’s Hydro-Man? Unclear! The Elementals, however, were created by Tony Isabella and artist Val Mayerik and debuting in the comics in 1974, and they also had a water monster on the roster. The Elementals were Hydron (water), Hellfire (fire), Magnum (earth), and Zephyr (wind). In the new trailer, we see what appears to be Magnum, Hydron and Hellfire.

The trailer also gives us our first glimpse of Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), who wields some pretty awesome power himself. He seems to have a touch of Doctor Strange’s magic to him, as well as the ability to shoot bolts of green energy from his hands. He is a friend or foe? In the comics, Mysterio is one of Spider-Man’s most versatile, nefarious enemies, but in the trailer, he’s presented as a potential friend, albeit one that essentially tells Peter Parker he can’t handle what’s coming. We’re going to go out on a limb and suggest that Mysterio goes from friend to foe by the film’s end.

The Elementals

The first major threat in the film sure looks like Magnum to us. The creature is being fought by Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in some kind of bombed out location. This creature has a bit of a Sandman thing going on (seen in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3), but, again, Sandman is a human turned into a sand-creature, while this thing looks more like the earth itself has conjured a Golem to destroy humans. It’s unclear where Maria Hill and Fury are, but it sure doesn’t appear to be one of the fancy European locales that dominate most of the trailer’s run time.

Also, note the creatur’es human-like face…this could make a case for there to be some connection between the Elementals and humanity.

The next elemental-like creature we see in the trailer would be Hellfire—a massive, flaming nightmare creature that looks like hell itself.

After that, we come face-to-water with what we believe is Hydron. You’ll notice that in stature, this thing seems roughly the same size as Magnum, only with an entirely different element in its control.

As if things couldn’t be more complicated for Spidey, one of his most iconic foes from the comics appears—Mysterio. In the trailer, however, Mysterio appears to be a friend, telling Peter he wants no part of this fight, and then immediately launching into action himself.

Spider-Man most often fights brilliant scientists (Far From Home‘s Vulture, Spider-Man 2‘s Dr. Octopus) or wayward souls with great powers who lack Spidey’s sense of great responsibility to go along with them. Recently, when he’s been tapped by the Avengers, Spider-Man’s had to fight other Avengers (Captain America: Civil War) and the most powerful supervillain in the universe. Now, it appears he’s going to be fighting ancient creatures whose powers might not be as mind-bending and time-reversing as Thanos, but who don’t lack for brute, terrible power.

New Suit, New Tower

Finally, two more shots to enjoy before we sign off. One is the new Spidey suit that Peter dons, no doubt courtesy of Nick Fury:

The second is a shot from the very beginning of the trailer. The folks at i09 pointed out that yes, that does appear to be The Avengers Tower getting remodeled—again:

Spider-Man: Far From Home opens on July 5.
