New Footage Aired in A Wrinkle in Time’s New Year’s TV Spot

One of 2018’s most eagerly anticipated films is Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time, adapted from Madeleine L’Engle’s beloved novel by screenwriter Jennifer Lee (Frozen, Zootopia). On New Year’s eve, Disney dropped this TV spot that features new footage of Chris Pine’s Dr. Alex Murry, the kidnapped father of our young hero Meg Murry, played by newcomer Storm Reid. The new spot focuses on family, featuring Meg’s mother, Dr. Kate Murry, played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Black Mirror, Jupiter Ascending). This spot is heavy on atmospherics and light on the actual story, which was gorgeously laid out in the first full-length trailer. Check out the spot:

The excitement surrounding the film is in large part due to the presence of DuVernay, one of the brightest lights working in Hollywood today, and the exceptional cast tackling a beloved work of fiction. The story revolves around the disappearance of Meg’s father five years earlier, after he discovered a new planet and was able to travel there—some 91 billion light years away—by utilizing a highly unconventional scientific concept based on the tesseract. Meg, along with her little brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) and her classmate Calvin O’Keefe (Levi Miller) want to find him, and are willing to bend science (and every rule their school has) to do so.  Eventually they come into contact with three mysterious astral travelers known as Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling) and Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey), who are ready to guide them. Their attempt to find Alex Murry will be dangerous, possibly even deadly, but it’s a journey they plunge themselves into, and from what we’ve seen thus far of DuVernay’s film, it’s going to be a moving, possibly mind-blowing film experience.

A Wrinkle in Time will hit theaters on March 9, 2018.
