Nothing Hidden: Full “You Can See Everything” Trailer Takes a Startling New Look at Elizabeth Holmes
The full trailer for Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s You Can See Everything has dropped. Their astonishing documentary centers on former Theranos founder and current federal prison inmate Elizabeth Holmes. The trailer opens with a very simple question from Fielder: “You really feel you did nothing wrong?” Holmes replies, “I did not.” Fielder asks where she thinks things went wrong. “Like, how are you where you are right now?” Holmes says she wishes she knew. “I don’t feel like I understand that,” she adds. The thing is, at least to this viewer, it really looks like she believes it.
This longer look at You Can See Everything gives us even more of a sense of what an astonishing coup it was for Fielder and Oppeheim to be given the opportunity to embed with Holmes in the weeks before she began her prison term. Fielder asks if she has reservations about him living there with her, “Twenty-four seven,” and Holmes says she doesn’t think so. If you knew nothing about her or her history, you’d be hard-pressed not to believe this, too. Perhaps the more logical conclusion is that Holmes believes she might use the film crew to her advantage to tell her preferred version of the story. “I think this is the moment in time to capture this story before I’m gone.”
The story of Holmes and Theranos has been told many times before, but never like this. There was investigative journalist John Carreyrou’s book “Bad Blood,” documentarian Alex Gibney’s 2019 film The Inventor, and Elizabeth Meriwether’s Hulu series The Dropout, in which Amanda Seyfried won an Emmy for portraying Holmes. Yet A24 is confident that the way Fielder and Oppenheim approached Holmes and this material is different, and the reaction from Telluride and the reviews coming out of the festival suggest they’re onto something.
There’s more here. A lot more. You Can See Everything sent a shockwave through the Telluride Film Festival, and the trailer makes it clear why. In another telling moment, Fielder interviews Holmes’ husband, William Evans, a hotel heir and technology executive. Fielder asks whether Evans ever felt worried that perhaps Holmes was scamming him.
“A hundred percent,” Evans replies, “but what did she have to gain from me?”
“Well, isn’t your family rich?” Fielder replies.
The trailer ends on a note of such dramatic emphasis it would be a shame to spoil it. What seems clear is that You Can See Everything is going to be one of the year’s most discussed films, and will likely have a major presence come award season, especially considering how unusual the entire set-up is as a documentary, with one of the filmmakers embedding himself not only in Holmes’ life but in the narrative itself.
