Hell on Wheels: Ryan Gosling Revs Up Marvel’s New “Ghost Rider”
Ryan Gosling is riding from a galaxy far, far away into Marvel Studios’ upcoming Ghost Rider film.
This was one of the biggest reveals during Marvel’s Hall H CinemaCon presentation. Gosling will team up with his Star Wars: Starfighter director Shawn Levy and the film’s screenwriter, Jonathan Tropper, for the new Ghost Rider film. Levy is not new to the MCU. He directed 2024’s colossal hit Deadpool & Wolverine.
The team plans on releasing the film in 2028. Gosling joined Kevin Feige and Shawn Levy on stage, the latter having warm words for his star after having completed Starfighter.
“Gosling is the absolute sh*t,” he said, adding, “I say that with tremendous respect.”
The last time Ghost Rider, aka Johnny Blaze, rode onto the big screen, he was played by Nicolas Cage in 2007 and 2011. On the small screen, Gabriel Luna played Ghost Rider on Agents of SHIELD.
The character, a stunt motorcycle driver who makes a literal deal with the devil, was created by writer Gary Friedrich and artist Mike Ploog, appearing in 1972’s “Marvel Spotlight No. 5,” eventually getting his own series a year later. Thanks to his handshake with Satan, Blaze becomes a flaming skull-headed dervish of vengeance on two wheels.
While Gosling is no stranger to blockbusters, having starred in this year’s first big hit, Project Hail Mary, as well as big-budget action films and thrillers, including Blade Runner 2049 and The Fall Guy, this will be the first time he’s ever played a superhero. There was a moment in the late aughts where he was vying for the role of the Green Lantern, but alas, it never came to be. The wait will probably be worth it for both Gosling and audiences.
There was plenty of other major news out of Marvel’s presentation, including that David Jonsson will be playing the future of Wakanda in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther 3. Jonsson will be playing the son of the late Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa, taking over his father’s mantle as the Black Panther.
For their Avengers: Doomsday presentation, Marvel also managed to create a hidden stage at the back of Hall H where cast members from Thunderbolts and the 2000s X-Men movies were.
The attendees also got to see footage the rest of the world will have to wait for: an extended look at Doomsday that revealed a much clearer picture of the stakes and the players. The look included a tete-a-tete between Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom and Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, as well as a bit of backstory as to why Doom is so hellbent on destruction (delivered by Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm).
Things are once again heating up in the MCU, with Avengers: Doomsday arriving in theaters this December 18. Adding Ryan Gosling to the MCU roster is certainly a major additional boost.
