“Avengers: Doomsday” Trailer Unites Marvel’s Mightiest Heroes Against Doctor Doom
The official trailer for the Russo Brothers’ Avengers: Doomsday has arrived, opening with a harbinger of doom. We see Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) peer out of a window, and he is suddenly bathed in a terrible light. A voiceover tells us that something is coming, “something that we may not be able to deter; before this day is done, we shall be faced with an unthinkable decision.”
We’re next given a speech by one of the most redoubtable Avengers of them all, Thor (Chris Hemsworth), who tells his assembled comrades that he’s fought with warriors far stronger than them, and they’ve all died facing enemies and threats that scared him far less than this one. So far, so gloomy and doomy.
Avengers: Doomsday will feature more superheroes than any previous installment, which seems impossible given how many supes were on hand to battle Thanos in both Infinity War and Endgame. But those two films didn’t include the retro X-Men, including Channing Tatum’s Gambit, who wasn’t even in the previous X-Men film, the Fantastic Four, and the anti-hero Thunderbolt crew. Thor’s call to arms is for all involved, from the Wakandans to the OG Avengers like himself and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), to put aside their differences and fight together.
But it’s who they’re fighting that makes Doomsday so intriguing—Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Glimpsed in a post-credits scene in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU after his Tony Stark gave up the ghost in Endgame as one of the most iconic villains in the Marvel canon, is the film’s biggest draw.
Also on hand in Doomsday are the Wakandans Shuri (Letitia Wright) and M’Baku (Winston Duke), the Fantastic Four’s Ben Grimm/the Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), and Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn).
There will be even more heroes joining the fight. Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America (complicating Steve Rogers’ return, one assumes), Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. There’s more: the retro X-Men and the rest of the New Avengers* (really, the Thunderbolts, which include Pugh’s Belova, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost, and David Harbour’s Alexei Shostakov) will be on hand.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18.
