More of Frozen 2‘s Story is Finally Revealed

When Disney unveiled the trailer for Frozen 2 this past February, it had been (shockingly) six years since we last saw Elsa and Anna. Frozen was a juggernaut success, one of the most successful animated films in history. The children (and their parents) who were so enthralled with “Let It Go” and the story of Elsa and Anna have grown up since then, but we’re guessing there’s going to be just as much excitement for Frozen 2. The trailer gave us a hint—and only a hint—of what was to come. It opens on a stunningly gorgeous, and menacing, ocean scene, with our heroine literally walking on water—until she’s caught up in an epic wave. Why is Elsa trying to run across the ocean? Where is she? What’s going on here? The Frozen 2 trailer is beautiful, but it’s beguiling, too:

The only bit of boilerplate Disney offered was this: Queen Elsa and her sister Anna will embark on an adventure that takes them to another land, far from the kingdom of Arendelle. Okay then! But finally, we’ve got a little bit more information thanks to a new synopsis just released by Disney:

“Why was Elsa born with magical powers? The answer is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, she’ll set out on a dangerous but remarkable journey. In Frozen, Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In Frozen 2, she must hope they are enough.”

Frozen was so magical in part because it gave us a central character in Elsa who was conflicted about her powers and what role, if any, she should play in the lives of those she loved. Now it sounds as if Frozen 2 will once again plunge this very nuanced and charming character into fresh trouble, and you can be almost certain millions of kids—and again, their parents—will be eager to follow Elsa anywhere.

Frozen 2 opens on November 22, 2019.
