Why Captain Marvel Will Take Some Cues From Terminator 2

We’re very excited about Captain Marvel, the first female-led movie in the MCU. Starring Brie Larson as the titular superhero (also known as Carol Danvers), filming is already underway on what will be one of next year’s most eagerly anticipated films. Now we know a little bit more about the film’s inspirations, thanks to Marvel Studios’ leading light, Kevin Feige, and how Danvers, who has not been present in any of the previous dust-ups involving the Avengers thus far, factors into the larger MCU family.

Speaking to Entertainment WeeklyFeige says that Captain Marvel, which will be set in the 90s, will take a lot of inspiration from the major action films of that decade. Feige also talked about how Samuel L. Jackson’s seemingly all-knowing Nick Fury, who has been making his presence felt since the very first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 2008’s Iron Man, will be on hand here in a way that calls back what he told Tony Stark more than a decade ago.

“We wanted to explore a period before Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury had any idea about any of the other heroes and crazy stuff going on in the world. You know, we first met Nick when he told Tony, “You’re part of a big universe. You just don’t know yet.” Well, we want to go back to a time when he didn’t know it yet, and really showcase and announce that Carol Danvers was that first hero that Nick came across. That meant she could be the singular hero, but place it within timing of the MCU. It also got us talking about different genres, exploring this notion of sort of the ‘90s action film. We hadn’t necessarily done anything like that before either, so there are definitely homages to our favorite ‘90s action films within Captain Marvel.”

Feige wasn’t going to dish much more, but when pressed to explain the ’90s action film comment, he name checked James Cameron’s Terminator 2 as the epitome of the very best that decade had to offer:

“That’s about as iconic as you get, looking at kind of those cool street level fights, street level car chases, and fun stuff like that. That being said, much of the movie takes place in outer space, as you might think a Captain Marvel movie would. Like all of our genre inspirations, there are bits and pieces here and there.”

That’s an interesting caveat; Captain Marvel‘s will be inspired by those epic street fights that took place in Terminator 2, but will take place partly in outer space.

Captain Marvel is due out on March 8th, 2019, and alongside  Larson and Jackson are Gemma Chan, Jude Law, and Ben Mendelsohn.
