Godzilla Takes Manhattan: Takashi Yamazaki’s “Godzilla Minus Zero” Set for World Premiere at NYFF
Godzilla is ready to take a bite out of the Big Apple.
Writer/director Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero will have its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival, Film at Lincoln Center announced. The King of Monsters will take over Alice Tully Hall on September 26, with Yamazaki and members of the cast and crew in attendance.
Minus Zero is the eagerly anticipated sequel to Yamazaki’s 2023 Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, hailed as one of the best ever in the legendary franchise by many critics. Minus One was the first domestic Japanese Godzilla film in seven years when it was released, taking viewers back to post-war Japan as the iconic kaiju surfaces from the ocean depths to unleash holy hell on a populace still reckoning with the ravages of World War II, a nation that was “baptized in the horrific power of the atom bomb” as the film’s press materials stated.
When Godzilla Minus One arrived on U.S. shores, the reviews glowed as brightly as the titan’s atomic breath. “The result is nothing short of magical: a feast for the eyes, an entertaining epic in every sense of the word,” wrote the Washington Post’s Lucas Trevor. “Godzilla Minus One isn’t just a good Godzilla movie. It’s an excellent Godzilla movie – arguably among the best ever to grace the screen,” said ReelViews James Berardinelli.
Minus Zero is set two years after the events of the previous film and follows the Shikishima family confronting new horrors. The synopsis reads: “War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here.”
“It is truly an honor to introduce our film to a global audience for the first time in a place of such history and prestige,” said Yamazaki in a statement. “I am filled with both awe and excitement to see how far the power of Japan’s Godzilla can terrify audiences around the world, and whether they will resonate with what lies beyond that fear.”
“More than 70 years after the first Godzilla movie, Takashi Yamazaki continues to prove that there’s life in the old franchise yet, returning to its postwar roots to locate a haunting, primal terror,” said Dennis Lim, NYFF artistic director. “Like its predecessor, ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ is a throwback blockbuster, a showcase for human drama and innovative craft, and we are excited to have its world premiere as this year’s NYFF Spotlight Gala.”
Minus Zero will join many marquee films from esteemed directors, including James Gray’s Paper Tiger, which will open the festival on September 25, and stars Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, and Miles Teller, and is centered on two brothers (Driver and Teller) whose pursuit of the American Dream gets dangerously derailed by the Russian mafia. Also playing is Tony Gilroy’s Behemoth!, starring Pedro Pascal as a musician returning home to Los Angeles, and Ava DuVernay’s documentary 14th, which explores the 14th Amendment in the United States and who gets to belong in America.
Godzilla Minus Zero will hit theaters on November 6.
