Matthew McConaughey Stars in Civil War Drama Free State of Jones

Matthew McConaughey stars in STX Entertainment's Free State of Jones as Newt Knight, a defiant Southern farmer who waged an armed rebellion against the Confederacy alongside other small farmers and with the assistance of local slaves. The uprising led Jones County, Mississippi, to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. The film's first trailer is finally here, and it's a taut, ripping minute of action. McConaughey seems right at home as the noble Knight, with a solid supporting cast and a true story that seems tailor made for the big screen.

Written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit, Pleasantville), Free State of Jones co-stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Beyond the Lights), Keri Russell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and Mahershala Ali (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, House of Cards).

Free State of Jones goes nationwide on June 24.
