Early Reactions to Midsommar Hype Horror Masterpiece

Jordan Peele loved it, and now it seems others who have gotten an early look at Ari Aster‘s Midsommar agree—this film is a wicked, wild horror masterpiece. It’s also funny! Early reactions to Aster’s follow-up to his smashing, terrifying 2018 debut Hereditary are starting to surface online. The reactions are essentially raves. Aster seems to have pulled off the very tricky feat of nailing his second film. This is what Peele himself just accomplished. After his sensational, Academy Award-winning debut Get Out, he delivered this year’s phenomenal Us. Now it looks like Aster is following his lead, but going his own way.

Midsommar follows Dani (Florence Pugh) and Christian (Jack Reynor), an American couple who venture to Sweden for a special 9-day festival that only occurs every 90 years. Who could resist such a once-in-a-lifetime event? They should have resisted have, folks. They really should have resisted.

Here are some of the reactions thus far:

Here’s the official synopsis:

Dani and Christian are a young American couple with a relationship on the brink of falling apart. But after a family tragedy keeps them together, a grieving Dani invites herself to join Christian and his friends on a trip to a once-in-a-lifetime midsummer festival in a remote Swedish village. What begins as a carefree summer holiday in a land of eternal sunlight takes a sinister turn when the insular villagers invite their guests to partake in festivities that render the pastoral paradise increasingly unnerving and viscerally disturbing. From the visionary mind of Ari Aster comes a dread-soaked cinematic fairytale where a world of darkness unfolds in broad daylight.

Midsommar hits theaters on July 3.
