A Parade of Pokémon Pop Up in New Detective Pikachu Trailer

There is a LOT to catch in the new Detective Pikachu trailer. The adventure mystery is going to be packed with all of our favorite Pokémon and each and every one looks glorious.

Apparently, humans living side by side with Pokémon companions is not strange to Tim Goodman (Justice Smith). It isn’t until a talking Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) shows up that things seem really off. He’s got a little body, but a big attitude and an even bigger mystery to solve. Pikachu doesn’t remember who he is and the only person he has a connection to has gone missing.

Of course, the point of Pokémon is to “catch ‘em all” and there are a lot of them popping up here. The cutest one to capture would definitely be Eevee who makes her magnificent debut. You can also spot Snorlax, Jigglypuff, and Bulbasaur if you keep your eyes peeled. The Pika-pets actually make a smooth transition from 2D animation to CGI, but I absolutely cannot abide by Mr. Mime. He is hilarious and freaks me the hell out.

Whatever version of Pokemon I played as a kid highly valued Charizard and I am thrilled to see him make a major entrance. Facing off against Pikachu in a really illegal looking cockfight, Charizard brings the heat. Pikachu gets stage fright when the time comes to fight back, but he gets his cheeks in gear later in the trailer and shows what those lightning bolts can do.

Star of my future nightmares is a freakish Mewtwo who looms ominously. The hairless cat with an alien tale seemed strange enough in the classic game, but it looks even more disturbing here. I’m about it, though.

It’s definitely a wacky premise, but this all looks so much better than I could have imagined. The Pokémon have tons of personality and a real hats off to the designers who transitioned them into the 3D space. Who knew Ryan Reynolds was the soul of Pikachu all along?

Detective Pikachu rolls into theaters May 10.
