The Nightflyers Trade One Deadly Threat for Another in First Trailer

Isn’t it always the things that are meant to save us that become our demise? At least that seems to be the case in science fiction. Rotten Tomatoes has the mind-bending first full trailer for Nightflyers straight from SDCC. Humanity’s only hope is having a little trouble.

Earth is in peril and the best option is to leave for greener pastures. The crew of the Nightflyer embarks on the journey with eagerness and hope, only to face terror on board. There is no sign of alien creepy crawlies getting on board. There is no sign of an invasion or violent stowaway on board at all, in fact. Whatever is killing this crew is already inside the ship. Or is the ship.

Of course, all great and brave explorers are people too. The sacrifices they make for their family may come at the expense of their family. The trailer features Karl D’Branin (Eoin Macken), a father and scientist who makes a promising discovery. With love for his young daughter, he leaves to find a better life and steps into a nightmare.

Nightflyers feeds on some of our greatest fears. Space travel, dying resources on Earth, and deadly threats in contained spaces. There are elements of a high tech haunted house in space and some definite psychological manipulation. It’s difficult to say yet if the surreal images the crew sees are mental breaks or sinister usage of the things they hold dear. You can rocket miles from Earth, but you cannot escape your own mind.

Interestingly, the episodic is intended to be multi-season. The show is based on George R.R. Martin’s 384-page book, which is very brief compared with his epic A Song of Ice and Fire series. Also, the characters are extremely isolated which increases the terror, but limits longevity. Once everyone on ship has perished, where does the show go? Dr. Agatha Matheson (Gretchen Mol) sends the altruistic warning that the Nightflyer should never return to Earth. Yet, unless it returns home or lands on another planet, I would be interested to see how it progresses.

Nightflyers launches into orbit on SyFy this fall.
