Let’s Break Down the new Avengers: Endgame Trailer

You’ve watched the new Avengers: Endgame trailer. You’ve scrutinized the new poster. Now it’s time to unpack the trailer and make sense of the new information.

The Beginning of the End—For Someone

The trailer begins with a message from Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) to Pepper Pot (Gwenyth Paltrow). Tony’s marooned on a spaceship after his nearly fatal tango with Thanos on Titan. He’s in a reflective mood, talking about the events that led him to become Iron Man. We know that Tony will somehow make it back to Earth—or to fight Thanos in some capacity—but he thinks he’s a goner. The only other Avenger who gets similar treatment is Captain America (Chris Evans). We are reminded of Steve Roger’s origin story, how he signed up to become a guinea pig during World War II in the experiment that turned him into a superhero.

Why is it that these two guys are the ones getting the “remember when” treatment? The obvious answer would be that one of them—if not both—will pay the ultimate price in stopping Thanos. The likely contender for this grim prize is Cap. We’ve known for a long time that Chris Evans was hanging up the vibranium shield after Endgame. There could be no more tragically fitting end for the Avengers’ most steadfast member than to sacrifice himself for the greater good.

A Tragic Reunion

Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner)’s back—with a new hairdo. The trailer gives us a glimpse of him training his daughter how to use a bow and arrow. The next thing we see is a rain-soaked reunion with his longtime friend Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). There is really only one conclusion to draw from the sequence of these two shots together; Hawkeye lost his family to the Thanos snap. This puts him in the company of literally every other person on Earth—and in the universe, presumably.

Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) has made it out of the Quantum Realm. Somehow. Consider that in the post-credits scene in Ant-Man and the Wasp showed the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly), Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) all turned to dust while Ant-Man was still inside the realm. However he made it out, he’s come looking for the Avengers to offer whatever help that he can.

Nebula (Karen Gillan) was left on Titan alongside Iron Man. She’ll have a role to play in this. In fact, nobody hates Thanos more.

We saw Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) make her grand entrance at Avengers HQ in the first Captain Marvel post-credits scene. The new Endgame trailer’s only comedic moment occurs when Thor shows off his Stormbreaker summoning abilities to the seemingly unimpressed newest Avenger. Everyone is hoping that Captain Marvel shows that she can wield Stormbreaker, too. What we can be sure of is that she’s the greatest secret weapon the Avengers have against Thanos.

The Avenger Uniforms

That’s right, folks—the Avengers finally have a uniform. They’ve often worn their own get-ups and gear in the past, but defeating Thanos and resurrecting half the universe requires serious solidarity. That starts with their duds, apparently. We’re digging the look.
