Captain Marvel Almost had a Thor: Ragnarok Related Post-Credits Scene

You’ve likely already digested Captain Marvel‘s two post-credits scenes. (Spoiler alert). The first and most important showed us the moment when Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson, obviously) shows up in Avengers: EndgameThe brief but utterly compelling scene gave us Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), War Machine (Don Cheadle), and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) trying to figure out who was on the other end of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson)’s desperate pre-snap pager. We all knew who it was. We saw Fury send the message in a Avengers: Infinity War post-credits scene. Captain Marvel’s logo appeared on his pager before Fury turned to dust. Yet watching the surviving Avengers puzzle over the pager, only to have Captain Marvel herself appeared directly behind them, was a joy.

The second post-credits scene involved Goose the cat. As we all now know, Goose is actually a Flerken. He swallowed the Tesseract during Captain America, and he coughed it back up in the post-credits scene. It turns out there was another potential post-credits scene that would have connected to Taika Waititi’s glorious Thor: Ragnarok.

Co-director Ryan Fleck told Empire Online that the potential scene focused on Jude Law‘s character Yon-Rogg. The double-dealing Kree turned out to be Captain Marvel’s real adversary, yet instead of finishing him off at the end of the film, she mails him back to Hala in a spaceship to send the Supreme Intelligence a message. It was the noble thing to do, if not very tactical. What Fleck revealed to Empire Online is that one post-credits scene idea was to show that Yon-Rogg doesn’t end up back in Hala. Instead, he finds himself in a location we’ve seen before…

“There was an idea on the table about having Jude Law […] emerge from his pod on Sakaar, and then have him look around and see the Devil’s Anus behind him and wonder, ‘Where the hell am I?’”

If you aren’t up to speed on your Thor: Ragnarok locations, let us help you out. Sakaar is that lawless, beautifully bizarre planet where The Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) lords over the Contest of Champions. This is where Thor and Hulk fought in Ragnarok. As for The Devil’s Anus, that refers to the insanely dangerous wormhole near Sakaar. It was through The Devil’s Anus that Thor, Bruce Banner, and Valkyrie escaped to Asgard.

Frankly, we find the two post-credits scenes we got more satisfying narratively. However, considering Yon-Rogg literally got away with murder, it would have been nice to see him end up on a planet where he’d be only one of many, many criminals, and likely not the toughest. Imagine him in a Contest of Champions against, say…a Flerken. We don’t like his odds.
