Joe Russo Hints That Chris Evans’ Captain America Isn’t Finished After Avengers 4

The saga of whether Avengers 4 is the last we’ll see of Chris Evans’ Captain America continues! It was only a month and change ago that Evans revealed that Avengers 4 would be the last time he suited up as Cap, which made sense for a lot of reasons. Evans has put 8 years into the character, and with the MCU is shifting into new territory as Phase 4 officially begins next year, the timing of Evans’ exit seemed right.

According to Infinity War and Avengers 4 co-director Joe Russo, fans might not be seeing the last of Cap after all. Russo was chatting with USA Today and had this to say about Evans’ future with the MCU:

“I think it was more emotional for him than it was us because he’s not done yet. I won’t explain what that means but fans will soon understand what I’m talking about.”

Say what? The most likely scenario here is that Evans is done as Cap in the sense he won’t be signing on for any future Captain America movies, nor will he factor into the new slate of films in Phase 4, which will be lead by a new crop of superheroes, including Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and continuing the stories of the newer members of the MCU like Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther. Perhaps Evans is “not done yet” in the sense he’ll return in flashbacks, or, maybe, he won’t die in Avengers 4 and will anoint a new Cap. Maybe Evans filmed scenes during the Avengers 4 shoot that will be used in later MCU films, in some way, shape or form. Maybe the Russo Brothers are going to show up at Evans’ house and film him making pancakes, then slap Cap’s shield on him in post-production.

If you’re thinking that maybe, just maybe, he’ll return for Avengers 5, that’s unlikely. As Russo told USA Today, that film is a ways off, and will likely include a whole host of new superheroes:

“It could be a little bit of time, with the integration of Fox and all the Fox characters – I haven’t talked directly to Kevin [Feige] about it so I don’t know what his plans are – but my guess would be there would be a little bit of time to integrate some of the other characters and take their time doing that.”

What we do know for sure is Captain America will have a major role to play in Avengers 4, and we’ll know more about his fate once that film drops on May 3, 2019.
