A Fantastic Underground World is Revealed in First Artemis Fowl Teaser

The first teaser trailer for Artemis Fowl introduces a mysterious high tech underground world. Soaring above the trees, towns, and cities, you would never know an advanced race is hiding below. Unless you are 12-year old genius Artemis embarking on a strange and dangerous adventure.

Based on the extremely popular YA books by Eoin Colfer, Disney hasn’t dug into much of the plot yet. This first taste, however, is a visual feast.  Director Kenneth Branagh has proven time and again he can tackle films that are major in scope. The sweeping shots are sure to look stunning on the big screen, and we already get a flavor for the special effects.

Artemis Fowl (Ferdia Shaw) is a legacy to a criminal family who goes in search of his missing father with the help of his protector, Butler (Nonso Anozie). What they find is an ancient and magical society of fairies living beneath the soil. Both scientifically and supernaturally advanced, the fairies will be an incredible force. There’s also some really neat font work on the title treatment, presumably drawing from the fairy language.

The story is just beginning, but Disney is obviously investing resources in a story that has serious sequel potential. Colfer’s series spans eight books, so there is plenty of material to cover. Hong Chau, Judi Dench, Josh Gad, and Lara McDonnell also star in the film. Here’s the official synopsis:

Disney’s “Artemis Fowl,” based on the beloved book by Eoin Colfer, is a fantastical, spellbinding adventure that follows the journey of 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl, a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, as he seeks to find his father who has mysteriously disappeared. With the help of his loyal protector Butler, Artemis sets out to find him, and in doing so uncovers an ancient, underground civilization—the amazingly advanced world of fairies. Deducing that his father’s disappearance is somehow connected to the secretive, reclusive fairy world, cunning Artemis concocts a dangerous plan—so dangerous that he ultimately finds himself in a perilous war of wits with the all-powerful fairies.

Artemis Fowl is slated for an August 9 release date.
