Josh Brolin Wore an Infinity Gauntlet for His Avengers: Infinity War Performance And It’s Amazing

The best actors seem to be the ones who are able to sympathize with their characters. Even if their character is scheming to destroy half the universe. “What he’s doing, from his point of view, is a very positive thing,” actor Josh Brolin says in a new behind-the-scenes clip from the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War Blu-Ray. Hm, sure he is.

Regardless of philosophical debates about vaporizing half the living population, i09 has the first look at the Brolin behind the brawn and it’s crazy cool. Silly motion capture suit aside, the technology is really impressive. It cannot be said that Brolin doesn’t have a presence. What Brolin and directors Anthony and Joe Russo stressed was the complex emotions of the character. He’s a bad dude for sure, but his heart is in the right place. Or, at least, he thinks it is. In order to give us the villain we deserve, Brolin had to hit a lot of different notes to bring out those nuances.

Brolin isn’t merely a canvas for the VFX artists to paint over in purple. He is fully acting the part and you can see how his actual expressions match the end product. Avengers: Infinity War animation director, Phil Cramer, talked us through how that was accomplished earlier this year, but now we will get to see it for ourselves.

Executive Producer Victoria Alonso shares that there are a whopping 2900 special effects shots in the film. That is unfathomable to me, but definitely believable. Infinity War was a sad yet stunning spectacle.

So, wearing the suit doesn’t look super cool and Brolin has to wear a cardboard cutout Thanos head above his for the other performers to interact with. Even so, it’s so cool to see a rough rendering of Thanos appear simultaneously on screen as he moves. Even cooler, he gets to wear the giant Infinity Gaunlet. I am officially jealous.

Hop over to i09 to see the sneak peek for yourself. Avengers: Infinity War comes to digital July 31 and Blu-Ray August 14.
