Shazam! Production is Officially Underway
Lightning is about to strike in the DCEU. Shazam! Director David F. Sandberg announced that production has begun on the film with the classic shot of a clapboard. Shazam! will bring to life every kid’s fantasy of joining their favorite legion of superheroes in the fight against crime.
Shazam! is the alter ego of young Billy Batson. With the mere utterance of the magical word, “shazam” he transforms into a costumed adult super hero with super flight, speed and strength. Young Billy will be played by Asher Angel (Andi Mack) while the adult version will be played by Chuck star, Zachary Levi.
Casting Levi in the leading role, along with the story’s kid centric theme, suggest that the tone will be lighter than the brooding Batman vs. Superman or Suicide Squad. Levi has made his name in comedic roles, and we suspect he’ll bring some of that humor to the new role.
Sandberg’s biggest projects to date have been Annabelle: Creation and Lights Out. Look closely at the Instagram post and you’ll see that Sandberg’s Annabelle: Creation cinematographer, Maxime Alexandre has returned to work with the director.
Shazam! will add fresh blood to the DCEU. The next standalone film will feature Aquaman this December, who also starred in Justice League last year. Fellow Justice League member, The Flash is expected to get his own film and Wonder Woman will most definitely be moving toward a sequel.
Shazam! won’t hit theaters until spring of 2019, but there are lots of exciting DCEU projects in the works. We’re excited to see where Sandberg takes things.
