Independence Day: Resurgence Viral Video Highlights Alien Tech

This summer the world will be pushed to the brink of extinction. Nope, we're not talking about what will happen if the Donald seems poised to win the presidential election, but rather the return of the nastiest aliens of them all in Independence Day: Resurgence. To get you in the mood for galactic warfare, 20th Century Fox has dropped this new video that reflects on “The War of 1996,” the conflict that redefined what a summer blockbuster could be in the original Independence DayThis video features Jeff Goldblum as David Levinson, one of the heroes of the War of 1996. The cast includes Liam Hemsworth, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, JMaika Monroe and Sela Ward. Will Smith couldn't reprise his role due to a scheduling conflict, so the filmmakers gave his character a gruesome end as a test pilot of one of the alien ships. Oof.

It's that recovered alien technology that is highlighted in the video below, and it's what the nations of Earth have used in their massive collaboration to create a global defense program to protect the planet. We're going to go out on a limb and say they'll need every bit of it when the aliens have their titular resurgence.

Independence Day: Resurgence hits theaters on June 24.
