The New Jason Bourne Trailer is a Knockout

Jason Bourne is back. Matt Damon returns to the role of Jason Bourne in this fifth installment of the Bourne franchise, with director Paul Greengrass returning as well. Damon told Buzzfeed that Jason Bourne is dealing with a world very much like our own: “Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world. It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.” Meanwhile Greengrass told Buzzfeed that he was tinkering with Jason Bourne in the years after his last outing in The Bourne Ultimatum, which was set in the waning years of the Bush presidency: “We always looked at those movies as really about the Bush presidency, and so we kind of had to wait for the world to change."  In the years between The Bourne Ultimatum and now, our amnesiac assassin has been off the grid.

In the new trailer, we're certainly in a post-Snowden world; his name is dropped before the first minute is up. The trailer is packed with the kind of kinetic action we've come to expect from a Greengrass/Damon Bourne film, with a knockout ending. Julia StilesTommy Lee JonesAlicia Vikander, and Vincent Cassel co-star.

Jason Bourne hits theaters on July 29.
