MPA Statement on White House’s National Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence, Section on Respecting Intellectual Property Rights and Supporting Creators
WASHINGTON – The Trump administration today published its National Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence. The following is a statement from Motion Picture Association (MPA) Chairman and CEO Charles Rivkin:
“The MPA welcomes the Trump administration’s National Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence, which encourages our nation’s ongoing leadership in both creativity and innovation. Strong copyright protections and innovation are mutually reinforcing and must continue to be in the age of AI.
“We commend the administration’s acknowledgement that there are disagreements regarding unauthorized AI training on copyrighted works and that the courts are the proper forum for resolving relevant disputes. As the Supreme Court has made clear, questions of fair use require a nuanced, case-by-case analysis, where ‘bright-line rules’ are not appropriate.
“We appreciate the administration’s recognition that free-market licensing is a vital tool to ensure that responsible AI innovation flourishes alongside America’s world-leading creative economy.
“Finally, we support the call for Congress to pass legislation protecting Americans from ‘digital replica’ abuse, with ‘clear exceptions for parody, satire, news reporting, and other expressive works protected by the First Amendment.’ To that end, we urge swift action to enact the bipartisan NO FAKES Act into law.”
