MPA Statement on U.S. Copyright Office’s Report on Artificial Intelligence
WASHINGTON – The following is a statement from the Motion Picture Association on Part 3 of the U.S. Copyright Office’s report on artificial intelligence (“AI”), addressing generative AI training.
“Strong intellectual property protection is critical both for maintaining America’s global leadership in creative industries and for expanding the nation’s role as a global leader in responsible, human-centered AI innovation. The United States Copyright Office’s report, in recognizing the complexities of fair use and the importance of the doctrine’s case-by-case application, reinforces the fact that copyright law is inherently adaptable to serve as both a catalyst for creativity and a springboard for AI innovation.
“The United States has long set a global example on copyright law and policy and played a strong role in shaping international norms, due in large part to the Copyright Office’s expert guidance for more than a century. This report follows that tradition and will serve as an important resource to policymakers on this critical and complex issue.”
