SCREENING & DISCUSSION

Boys State

March 9, 2021

Apple TV+ and the Motion Picture Association hosted a special screening of Boys State, the 2020 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize-winning documentary. The film is a wildly entertaining and continually revealing immersion into a week-long annual program in which a thousand Texas high school seniors gather for an elaborate mock exercise: building their own state government.

Motion Picture Association Chairman and CEO Charles H. Rivkin gave remarks to open our event, followed by Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) and Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) — both of whom are Boys State alumni — who also provided introductory remarks for the event.

Representative David Cicilline (D-RI) provided remarks immediately following the screening, leading into our panel discussion featuring student and film subject Steven Garza and filmmakers Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss. Emmy-winning journalist Betsy Fischer Martin moderated the conversation.
