Parasite

February 3, 2020

Tonight, in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, the Motion Picture Association hosted a special screening of the Academy Award-winning film Parasite at our headquarters in Washington, D.C.

In Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, greed and class discrimination threaten the newly formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan.

“While our home and headquarters are here in Washington, the Motion Picture Association is very much a global organization, with offices and a great deal of activity in the Asia Pacific region,” said MPA’s Chairman and CEO Charles H. Rivkin.

“We’re excited that for the first time ever,” he continued, “the global box office exceeded $42 billion last year. Korea’s success is certainly a part of that, driven not only by the spirit of its own people but the open markets and rule of law that have allowed them to excel in the way they do.”

The audience also heard from Ambassador Lee Soo Hyuck, who further discussed the recent growth of the Korean film and television industry, and the importance of films such as Parasite both in that growth and in Korean culture writ large.
