SCREENING & DISCUSSION

1917

December 9, 2019

Tonight, the Motion Picture Association, Comcast NBCUniversal, and Universal Pictures co-hosted a screening and discussion of the upcoming film 1917. Joining us were the following filmmakers and actors from the movie:

  • Sam Mendes, director/producer/writer
  • Krysty Wilson-Cairns, writer
  • George MacKay, actor
  • Dean-Charles Chapman, actor

From the film’s official website:

At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman), are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers—Blake’s own brother among them.

The film was also shot by famed cinematographer Roger Deakins, who used long takes and intricate moving camera shots to present the effect of just two continuous takes throughout the entire movie.

“I wanted to create an unbroken, two-hour experience,” Mendes said during the discussion. “An unbroken relationship between the audience and the characters.”
