The Russo Brothers Share a Tear Jerking Captain America Tribute Video

The fate of Captain America is one of Avengers: Endgame‘s most solemn questions. We’ve known for a long time that Chris Evans is hanging up the vibranium shield after the conclusion to the Russo Brothers two-part epic. The Russo’s themselves have equivocated about this fact, telling us that Evans might not be done with Cap after Endgame. This flies in the face of Evan’s own comments:

“Officially wrapped on Avengers 4,” he tweeted. “It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”

The Russos are notorious for messing with the legion of Marvel fans, so who knows what is actually going on here, but now they’ve gone and shared a Captain America fan tribute video that has us a little misty-eyed.

Are they hinting at his demise in Endgame? It would be a heartbreaking but fitting send-off—Cap laying down his life to save his friends. It’s also an entirely plausible scenario considering Evans is leaving the role. Take a look at the video, which is equal parts touching and haunting, and ask yourself why the Russos are sharing it:

The tribute does a deft job of weaving in Cap’s many appearances throughout his run through the Marvel Cinematic Universe by focusing on his biggest strength; an unwavering commitment to standing up to bullies. This mentality is truly is what is at the core of his character. More so than any other Avengers, Captain America has remained a steadfast, unwavering protector figure. This doesn’t mean the character isn’t complicated. He’s fought for what he’s believed is right but has run afoul of the U.S. Government and S.H.I.E.L.D. multiple times. He has, of course, fought against his own friends in Captain America: Civil War.

But seriously, why are the Russo Brothers sharing this fan video? That’s the million dollar question. One theory is they are messing with us. Again. Another theory is that they are teasing Cap’s upcoming sacrifice. Whatever the reason, hats off to iAmRookie for putting together a sendoff video worthy of Cap. We won’t know his fate for certain until Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26.
