Things Get Complicated for Anna Kendrick & Blake Lively in A Simple Favor Trailer

Ghostbusters, Spy and Bridesmaids director Paul Feig is back with a new female-centered thriller, A Simple Favor. Lionsgate has delivered the first teaser trailer, showcasing the hugely talented duo of Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively. Kendrick is Stephanie, a mommy vlogger who counts Lively’s Emily has one of her best friends, despite there being something…mysterious about her. This sense of Emily’s core distance is amplified when she goes missing, and its up to Stephanie to track her down. Stephanie enlists Emily’s husband Sean (Henry Golding), as the two of them uncover Emily’s myriad secrets, revealing someone they didn’t know well at all.

This is all right in Feig’s wheelhouse, who loves putting women front and center in stories that are usually dominated by men. While Bridesmaids was a film that had to be all about women, it was still an incredibly refreshing and wild ride, and pure joy watching that incredibly talented cast of women get to own every funny scene in the film. Spy gave us an action-packed thriller that more then held its own in that male-dominated genre, buoyed by a winning, memorable performance by the titular spy in question, the incredible Melissa McCarthy. Ghostbusters became, absurdly, a cultural flashpoint when a bunch of trolls online decided that women shouldn’t be playing the iconic characters originated in the mid-80s, as if Feig was recasting The Dirty Dozen with all men (note: Paul Feig should recast The Dirty Dozen with all men). Instead of demurring even in the slightest to the tender, wounded egos of a bunch of anonymous online screamers, Feig not only stood by his incredible cast, but has said he wants to make a sequel.

So yeah, we’re excited about A Simple Favor, which gives us two talented actresses, intrigue, danger, suspense, and who knows what else. While this teaser trailer is slight on details, we know that the source material is juic. A Simple Favor is based on the novel by Darcey Bell, adapted by American Horror Story and Nerve screenwriter Jessica Sharzer. Joining Kendrick, Lively and Golding are Andrew Rannells, Linda Cardellini, Jean Smart, and Rupert Friend.

A Simple Favor arrives in theaters on September 14, 2018. Check out the first trailer below.
