Idris Elba Faces Down Evil in 3 New The Dark Tower Teasers

Nikolaj Arcel's The Dark Tower has a lot going for it. It has the sensational source material (Stephen King's ambitious multi-series novel), and two massively magnetic actors portraying the central roles, Idris Elba as the Gunslinger, and Matthew McConaughey as the Man in the Black. Now Sony has dropped three fresh teasers giving us a longer look at the film, beginning with the below teaser, entitled "Earth."

As we wrote on May 3The Dark Tower takes place in Mid-World, a dimension like our own that is starting to unravel into a kind of post-apocalypse expanse of deadbeat settlements and towns, all of which are beset by creepy magic and violence. Arcel's adaptation is not based on any one of the novels but a mixture of all of them, no small feat, which should give him leeway and give fans pause before they decide he hasn't done King's epic justice. From our vantage, this first trailer is very promising, and with two fantastic leads in Elba and McConaughey, The Dark Tower has a very good chance of being the very adaptation we've been waiting for. As you saw in the above, Elba's Gunslinger is more than his name suggests, and his relationship to his trusty revolvers is mystical. That point is made clearer in the second teaser, "Knight."

In the final teaser, McConaughey's Man in Black takes center stage, promising the Gunslinger that 'Death always wins."

Here's the official synopsis for the film:

Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor) is a young 11-year-old adventure seeker who discovers clues about another dimension called Mid-World. Upon following the mystery, he is spirited away to Mid-World where he encounters the lone frontiersman knight Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), who is on a quest to reach the ‘Dark Tower’ that resides in End-World and reach the nexus point between time and space that he hopes will save Mid-World from extinction. But with various monsters and a vicious sorcerer named Walter Padick (Matthew McConaughey) hot on their trail, the unlikely duo find that their quest may be difficult to complete.

The Dark Tower hits theaters on August 4.
