Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone Fall in Love in 1st La La Land Trailer (and so do we)

Did you love writer/director Damien Chazelle's WhiplashSo did we. Did you find it surprisingly terrifying, stirring and utterly unique? Check. So you'll likely be as excited as we are about Chazelle's next effort, La La Land, which Chazelle and his go-to composer, Justin Hurwitz (read our interview with Hurwitz about Whiplash here, and look for a new interview about La La Land in the coming months) had actually been working on before Whiplash. It's a musical, gang, and it stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as Sebastian and Mia, respectively, the former a dedicated jazz pianist, the latter an aspiring actress, both of whom are struggling to make it in Los Angeles as artists. With Chazelle and Hurwitz's filmmaking and musical chops, this conceit alone would get us to the theater, but La La Land also stacks the deck with a cast that includes John Legend, Rosemarie DeWitt, Finn Wittrock, Callie Hernandez, Sonoya Mizuno, Jessica Rothe, Tom Everett Scott and Josh Pence.

We're already enraptured by this first trailer. La La Land will be in theaters this December—a prime Oscar release date, we might add.
